The Importance of Making a Wedding Album

This is the one photo I’ve seen of my parents on their wedding day.

I love it when a couple has a wedding album. I can’t emphasize how important it really is to have a wedding album. We live in the world of Facebook and digital technology, but there’s something about holding a real album in your hands that makes the day more meaningful. More tactile. More memorable. More solid.

I think about the one wedding portrait I’ve ever seen of my parents. Yes, there’s only one. It’s a faded 8 x 10 that sits framed on our mantle, with my dad in his powder-blue suit (oh yeah, he was stylish!) and my mother in a borrowed wedding dress that still looked phenomenal on her. I love this picture. I love it because it’s real. I love it because I can hold it in my hands, and I can see it every time I go home.

I wish there was an album to look through, but there isn’t. I wish I could see my grandparents on that day. How wonderful would it be to see my late grandpa walking my mother down the aisle? How fun would it be to see how young my uncle looked? For years I’ve heard about the “land yacht full of booze” at the reception (land yacht is what my father calls a certain Buick with a big trunk and bad gas mileage). It would be amazing to actually see it.

All of these things were part of my family history, but I can only imagine them. I can’t see them. All I have is the oral tradition, and one 8 x 10 photo.

I want to hug our clients that get wedding albums, because they’re creating something that will last. Something that isn’t just for them, but for their children and grandchildren.

This bride and groom commissioned us to make a wedding album from their images.

Russell took some gorgeous photos of the wedding album below. The point of this blog post was supposed to be about showing off the fantastic craftsmanship of our albums. Things like the panoramic layout, edge-to-edge flush mounting, lay-flat spine, and all that technical mumbo jumbo that shows the album’s worth.

Only, that’s not why a wedding album is valuable. Sure, it’s well made, but it’s what’s on the inside of that album that matters. It’s the printed pictures. It’s the story of that day. I honestly don’t care that my parents 8 x 10 wedding photo is faded, or that it was probably printed at a drugstore and put in a cheap frame. I just care that it exists.

Get an album. Make something physical. We don’t care if you print it with us, or if you collage a scrapbook together on your own. Get the images off your computer and make something tangible and real with them.

Your wedding is an important part of your history. Your family will want to see it … particularly the family that isn’t born yet.
